In our parish-wide survey, eight in 10 respondents deemed the following traits essential in candidates seeking to be our next rector:
an effective preacher-speaker
a person of faith
mature and emotionally secure
a compassionate, caring and welcoming person
a good leader
Additionally, more than half of survey respondents say they are eager to welcome to St. Dunstan’s a priest who works well on a team, deals effectively with conflict, and helps people work together to solve problems; is accepting of those with divergent views and builds fellowship; ministers effectively to those in crisis; is a thoughtful, creative planner of worship; and is a good communicator orally and in writing. We especially seek a rector who will be supportive of our existing ministries and school and willing to push the envelope in creative ways. “Someone who will roll up his or her sleeves and work with us,” one parishioner said.
In our parish-wide conversations in July and August 2019, and in survey comments, parishioners also expressed a keen desire for a rector who will prioritize encouraging young families to become part of St. Dunstan’s and grow with us. Similarly, we hope our rector will support our ongoing worship with people at times in addition to Sunday mornings.
The rector should become involved in the wider spiritual community and by doing so, foster greater understanding among the various faiths.
Parishioners say they deeply value our music program and its increasingly diverse genres of music and desire that our new rector share that enthusiasm.
On a practical level, we hope to bring aboard a rector with administrative and organizational skills consistent with what is needed to support the vestry and staff in managing a faith community of St. Dunstan’s size, its ambitious ministry portfolio, and its passionate outreach effort.
Our parishioners are praying for a compassionate, spiritual guide, one who will help us put God’s word into action. This parishioner put it best: “I hope St. Dunstan’s will continue to lead by example, drawing in searchers and inspiring us all to be even better Christians.” The good shepherd who will help us accomplish that is the person we hope soon to meet.
